Development of APS MCrAlY Dense Bond Coats
نویسنده
چکیده
The objective of this study was to mimic the microstructure of MCrAlY coatings sprayed using HVOF (High Velocity Oxy-Fuel) processes by using an Air Plasma Spray (APS) process in order to improve oxidation and spallation life of MCrAlY APS coatings. Figure 1 shows the typical microstructures obtained when spraying bond coats using the (a) HVOF process, and (b) the APS process. The microstructures developed by each process are very different. The HVOF process produces a dense coating that protects the substrate material against oxidation and also serves a bond coat for the top Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC) coating. APS MCrAlY coatings typically contain more internal defects (pores, oxides, particle splat boundaries) and do not provide the same level of oxidation protection as a dense HVOF coating. APS coatings add-in thermal expansion mismatch and adhesion when used as a bond coat layer between the substrate and the TBC.

Modern gas turbine hot sections need to be protected from elevated temperature and damaging environments. This protection starts as a typically two layer coating system, the base layer or bond coat (BC) acts as a corrosion barrier and a kind of buffer for the thermal mismatch between the base material and the second top thermally protective layer or Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC). The BC is norm...

In the present study NiCrAlY bond coating layer was produced by electroplating against common atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). Both types of the bond coats were applied on IN738LC base metal then, the YSZ (ZrO2-8% Y2O3) thermal barrier top layer was coated by atmospheric plasma spray technique. Hot corrosion is one of the main destructive factors in thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) which come ...

The effects of the bond coat species on the delamination or fracture behavior in thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) was investigated using the yclic thermal fatigue and thermal-shock tests. The interface microstructures of each TBC showed a good condition without cracking or delamination after flame thermal fatigue (FTF) for 1429 cycles. The TBC with the bond coat prepared by the air-plasma spray ...
متن کاملEffect of Surface Morphologies on the Isothermal Oxidation Behavior of MCrAlY Coatings Fabricated by High-velocity Oxyfuel Processes
In this study, the effect of surface morphologies on the isothermal oxidation behavior of MCrAlY coatings fabricated by high-velocity oxyfuel (HVOF) processes was investigated. To do so, free standing coatings with as-sprayed and polished surfaces were isothermally oxidized at 1050°C. The thickness of the bond coat was approximately 380μm. The Ra of the as-sprayed and polished surfaces were 6.4...

MCrAlY coatings (M=Ni and/or Co) have been widely used for the protection of superalloy components against oxidation and hot corrosion in the hot sections of gas turbines. The drive to improve engine combustion efficiency while reducing emissions by increasing the operation temperature brings a big challenge for coating design. As a result, the need for improvement of MCrAlY coatings for better...
